建築に加えられる装飾。何をもって建築の装飾要素とするかはあいまいであるが,一般には間取り,構造体の実用的機能に関係しない建築表現,すなわち細部のモールディング(刳形(くりがた))や彩色などを意味する。具体的にそれらの現れる部位は,屋根の棟(むね)飾り,軒飾り,腕木や軒組物や軒裏の飾り,柱頭,壁面装飾,手すりや飾格子,天井飾り,把手(とつて)や蝶番(ちようつがい∥ちようばん)などの飾金物,建具の飾り,窓飾り,モザイクや寄木などの床装飾等々,建築のあらゆる部分に及ぶ。
