Specific areas in which they appear include roof ridges, eaves ornaments, brackets, eaves braces, eaves decorations, capitals, wall decorations, banisters, lattices, ceiling decorations, decorative metal fittings such as handles and hinges, fittings decorations, window decorations, floor decorations such as mosaics and parquet, and more, covering every part of architecture. 建築に加えられる装飾。何をもって建築の装飾要素とするかはあいまいであるが,一般には間取り,構造体の実用的機能に関係しない建築表現,すなわち細部のモールディング(刳形(くりがた))や彩色などを意味する。具体的にそれらの現れる部位は,屋根の棟(むね)飾り,軒飾り,腕木や軒組物や軒裏の飾り,柱頭,壁面装飾,手すりや飾格子,天井飾り,把手(とつて)や蝶番(ちようつがい∥ちようばん)などの飾金物,建具の飾り,窓飾り,モザイクや寄木などの床装飾等々,建築のあらゆる部分に及ぶ。
