Book of Jeremiah

It is counted among the three major prophetic books of the Old Testament. It is one of the later prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and the 12 minor prophets) in the original Hebrew text. According to Jewish tradition, it was written by the prophet Jeremiah, who lived during the fall of the southern kingdom of Judah. However, because it took a long time to compile and contains a variety of content, it is generally believed to have been compiled into its current form based on several sources. It includes prose and verse, and contains oracles from the prophets and records of their lives. It is one of the longest books in the Old Testament, with 52 chapters. It is also the book that conveys the truest facts about the prophets themselves. In particular, Jeremiah's idea of a "new covenant" had a strong influence on the writers of the New Testament.

旧約聖書の三大預言書の一つに数えられる。ヘブライ語原典の後預言書 (イザヤ，エレミヤ，エゼキエル，ダニエルの大預言書および 12の小預言書) の一つ。ユダヤの伝承によれば，南王国ユダの没落の時代に生きた預言者エレミヤの手になるとされているが，編纂は長期にわたり，また種々の内容を含むために，一般にはいくつかの資料を基にして現在の形に編纂されたものとされている。散文と韻文を含み，預言者の託宣，預言者の生涯の記録などを内容とする。旧約のなかでは最長編ものの一つで 52章に及ぶ。また預言者自身に関して，この書ほど真実の事柄を伝えているものもほかにない。特にエレミヤの「新しい契約」の思想は新約聖書の著者に強い影響を与えた。
