Decadence is a French word that generally means decadence, decadence, or decadence. Originally it referred to the decline of culture at the end of the Roman Empire, which reached the height of its ripeness and became technical, unnatural, unhealthy, and corrupt, but here it refers to the tendency of a group of artists at the end of the 19th century, mainly in Paris. Between 1880 and 1885, the number of young people attending Mallarmé's "Tuesday Society" gradually increased, and at the same time, many clubs were established and small magazines were published, mainly in cafes, and more and more people openly spoke of the aesthetics of decadence.

〈デカダンスdécadence〉は一般に衰退，落，退廃を意味するフランス語である。本来はローマ帝国末期の文化が爛熟の極に衰退して技巧的になり，不自然，不健康，腐敗の様相をあらわしてくることを指したが，ここではパリを中心とした19世紀末の一群の芸術家たちの傾向を指す。1880年から85年にかけて，マラルメの〈火曜会〉に列席する青年たちがしだいに数を増してき，他方ではカフェを中心として，数多くのクラブが設立されたり小雑誌が刊行されたりして，デカダンスの美学を公然と口にする者がふえてきた。
