...Such sand and clay are repeatedly layered as annual layers, which are the same as tree rings, and are indicated by light and dark colors up to 3 cm thick. G. De Geer (1858-1943) of Sweden named this "verb" (meaning "repeated"). By tracing the outcrops of such varved clay in the direction of glacial retreat and comparing the stratigraphy of the varved clay at each location, it is possible to determine the time and speed at which the glacier retreated.
