A general term for the genus Eremurus in the Liliaceae family. Approximately 30 species grow wild in western Central Asia. Linear leaves grow from the base, and flower stalks 30-180 cm long grow from between them, producing racemes of star-shaped flowers. The pointed inflorescence resembles an animal's tail, and the genus name Eremurus is derived from the Greek words for "desert" and "tail." In recent years, it has also been used as a cut flower. It is weak to high summer temperatures, but can tolerate low temperatures, and can withstand winters as low as -15°C. It prefers well-drained, organically rich soil.
