A type of melilite with the chemical composition Ca 2 MgSi 2 O 7 , which forms a solid solution with gehlenite. Tetragonal crystal system. Short columnar or plate-like crystals. Colorless, gray-green or brown vitreous luster. Mohs hardness 5-6, specific gravity 2.944. It gelatinizes with hydrochloric acid. A rare silicate mineral with four-coordinated magnesium, it decomposes into monticellite and wollastonite at temperatures below 700°C and pressures below 4 kbar. It is rare in nature, occurring in contact metamorphic rocks and in xenoliths in anorthosites in regional metamorphic belts, but has not been found in Japan.
