A mammal of the bovidae family in the order Artiodactyla (illustration). A medium-sized antelope with remarkably long limbs and neck, and a small, flat head. It is similar to the gerenuk but smaller, and the horns, which only males have, curve backwards and then forwards. The horns are 15-25 cm long. The body is reddish brown with a purplish tint, except for the white back. The tail is long and black. The body length is about 117 cm, the tail length about 35.5 cm, and the weight is 27-34 kg. It usually lives alone or in family groups of 3-5 in the open, dry areas with occasional bushes from northeastern Somalia to Ethiopia, and like the gerenuk, it stands on its hind legs and eats shrub leaves.

偶蹄目ウシ科の哺乳類（イラスト）。四肢と首が著しく長く，頭が小さく扁平な中型のアンテロープ。ジェレヌクに似るが小さく，雄のみにある角ははじめ後方に，次いで前方に湾曲する。角の長さは15～25cm。体色は，白色の背面を除いて全体に紫色がかった赤褐色。尾は長く黒色。体長117cm前後，尾長35.5cm前後，体重27～34kg。ソマリアの北東部からエチオピアにかけての，ところどころに茂みのある見通しのよい乾燥地帯に，ふつう単独，あるいは3～5頭の家族群ですみ，ジェレヌク同様，後肢で立って灌木の葉を食べる。
