An old town in Nanjo-gun, central Fukui Prefecture. Its center is the Hino River basin, a tributary of the Kuzuryu River, and the Hokuriku Main Line runs through it. It is primarily engaged in agriculture and forestry, producing rice, wheat, and other crops. The ruins (historic site) of Somayama Castle from the Nanboku-cho period are located here. In January 2005, it merged with Imajo-cho and Kono-mura in Nanjo-gun to become a town, forming Minami-Echizen-cho. Area: 53.06 km2. Population: 5,792 (2003).
