…During the reign of Henry IV (1589-1610), the desire to produce expensive tapestries domestically and prevent the outflow of wealth through imports grew even stronger, and efforts to establish a full-scale manufactory began. In 1601, Henry IV summoned about 200 weavers from Flanders and had them live in the mansion of the Gobelin family, a family of dyers for generations, on the Rue Saint-Marcel on the banks of the Bièvre River near Paris (the name Gobelin comes from this family). Marc de Coomans and François de la Planche were appointed as the managers of the manufactory here, and the foundation of the Gobelin Manufactory was laid. …
