Stanley

American biochemist. He obtained his Ph.D. in chemistry from R. Adams at the University of Illinois in 1929. The following year he researched steroids under HO Wieland at the University of Munich in Germany. After returning to Japan, he became an assistant at the Rockefeller Institute in 1932, where he engaged in research on various viruses, and became a member of the institute in 1940. In 1948 he became a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and director of the Virus Research Institute. In 1935 he isolated the tobacco mosaic virus and extracted it as a nucleoprotein crystal; although these crystals appeared to be a lifeless chemical substance, they grew and multiplied within cells and acted as pathogens, sparking much discussion as something between living and non-living things. For this work, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1946, along with JB Sumner and JH Northrop.

アメリカの生化学者．1929年イリノイ大学のR. Adamsのもとで化学のPh.D.を取得．翌年ドイツのミュンヘン大学のH.O. Wieland(ウィーラント)のもとでステロイドの研究をし，帰国後，1932年ロックフェラー研究所の助手となり，各種ウイルスの研究に従事，1940年同研究所所員となる．1948年カリフォルニア大学バークレー校教授，同ウイルス研究所所長となる．1935年タバコモザイクウイルスを分離し，核タンパク質結晶として取り出したが，この結晶は生命のない化学的な物質のように見えながら，細胞内で成長，増殖し，病原体として作用するところから，生物と無生物の中間にあるものとして，多くの議論を引き起こした．この業績で，1946年J.B. Sumner(サムナー)，J.H. Northrop(ノースロップ)とともにノーベル化学賞を受賞した．
