The capital of the Slovak Republic. Population 452,000 (1996). German: Pressburg, Hungarian: Pozsony. Located in the northwest of the Danube lowlands of Slovakia, at the southern foot of the Little Carpathian Mountains (northwest of the Carpathian Mountains), facing the Danube River. Located about 55 km from Vienna and about 20 km from the Hungarian border, it has developed as an international city with a mixture of Slavic, German, and Hungarian peoples, as a center of railway and river traffic between the east and west of Central and Eastern Europe and between the north and south of the country.
