...As the southward expansion policies of Austria and Russia became more prominent in the 17th century, some Wallachian princes tried to secede from the Ottoman Empire in the hope of receiving support from either of them, but all failed. Prince Constantin Brîncoveanu (reigned 1688-1714) was known as a protector of culture and education, and in 1702 built the Mogosoaia Palace on the outskirts of Bucharest, leaving behind the so-called Brîncoveanu style. However, he was reported by his rival, the great nobleman Cantacuzino, for trying to ally with Russia, and was summoned to Istanbul and executed.
