Aulostomus chinensis (English name: Aulostomus chinensis)

Japanese: ヘラヤガラ(篦矢柄) - ヘラヤガラ（英語表記）Aulostomus chinensis

A marine fish of the family Coronidae in the order Syngnathidae (illustration). It has a long and slender body shape similar to that of the closely related coronoid fish, and is laterally compressed from the snout to the tail, reminiscent of a bamboo spatula, hence the name. It also has a remarkably long, tubular snout with a mouth at the tip that opens diagonally upwards, hence the English name trumpet fish. Another characteristic is that its dorsal and anal fins are almost identical and positioned backwards, and there are 8 to 12 free spines lined up in front of the dorsal fin. Its pectoral fins are small, and its pelvic fins even smaller.

ヨウジウオ目ヘラヤガラ科の海産魚（イラスト）。近縁のヤガラに似た体型で細長く，かつ吻端（ふんたん）から尾端まで側扁し，竹べらを連想させるためこの名が与えられた。また，吻が管状で著しく長く，その先端にある口が斜め上方に開くところから，英名をtrumpet fishという。背びれとしりびれがほぼ同形で後方に対置し，背びれの前方に遊離した棘（きよく）が8～12本並ぶことも特徴である。胸びれは小さく，腹びれはいっそう小さい。
