Aiming to develop coal on his estate at Worsley in Lancashire, he used engineer James Brindley (1716-72) to complete the first full-scale artificial canal in England (the Bridgewater Canal) to Manchester in 1761, which sparked the “canal mania.” This canal halved the price of coal in Manchester.
