A port city on the Ohio River in southwest Indiana, United States. Population 121,582 (2000). Located in coal, oil and agricultural regions, it is an important shipping port and commercial center, serving as a gateway to the southern region. Industries include furniture, machinery, clothing, plastics and food. The town was founded in the early 19th century as a ferry terminal on the Ohio River. Within the city limits, there is a zoo, many parks, a stadium that can accommodate about 10,000 people, and is the home of the Methodist University of Evansville.
