A roof with stones placed on top of the shingles to prevent them from being blown away by the wind. In Japan, this type of roof is often seen on the roofs of private homes depicted in medieval picture scrolls, and is known to have been in use in Kyoto city in the early Edo period from the Rakuchu Rakugaizu, with some roofs even having the stones tied down with rope to prevent them from rolling off. This type of roof is probably a wisdom from an era when tiles were not yet widespread, when shingles were the most reliable roofing material, and when nails and other materials were not so abundant. Nowadays, it is only used on small buildings in windy mountainous areas, such as mountain huts.
