Hwang Jin-i (English spelling)

Japanese: 黄真伊 - こうしんい（英語表記）Hwang Chini

A famous courtesan in Kaesong (a city in the southeastern part of South Hwanghae Province) during the reign of Emperor Jungjong of the Yi Dynasty (1506-1544). Her given name was True Girl. Her courtesan name was Myeongwol. She was beautiful, skilled in poetry, calligraphy, and music, and was friends with many notable people of the time. She was praised as one of the three great wonders of Songdo (Kaesong), along with her teacher, the great Confucian scholar Seo Gyeongdeok, famous scenic spots, and Park Yeon Waterfall. She left behind many excellent works of Chinese poetry, and especially sijo (comic poems) on the theme of love. Unlike the works of men bound by Confucian morality, she occupies a unique position in the history of sijo, as she freely sings of the life of love.

朝鮮，李朝中宗代 (1506～44) の開城 (黄海南道南東部の都市) の名妓。一名，真娘。妓名は明月。美貌で，詩，書，音律に秀で，当時の名士たちと親交があった。師でもあった碩儒の徐敬徳，名勝，朴淵の滝とともに松都 (開城) の三絶とうたわれた。漢詩，および特に愛情を主題とした時調 (シジョ) に幾多の秀作を残したが，儒教道徳に縛られた男性の作品とは異なり，愛情生活を奔放にうたい上げて時調史上に特異な位置を占めている。
