[1] This temple is said to have been built by Empress Komyo in the Hokkeji-cho area of Nara City. According to legend, the Empress made a vow to set up a bathhouse and wash the bodies of 1,000 people herself. When she did so, Aksho Nyorai appeared in the form of a leper, and so the temple was named after him. It was abolished during the Tencho era ( 824-834 ). [2] In the first year of the Ten'o era ( 781 ) , Isonokami Yakatsugu converted his private residence near Heijo-kyo into a temple. Japan's first library, a pavilion, was built within the temple.
