A large evergreen shrub of the Apocynaceae family, often reaching up to 5m in height. Native to India. Tolerant of dryness and high temperatures, it is widely planted in temperate and tropical regions around the world. It has thick, thin leaves arranged in whorls of three. When damaged, it exudes a white milky sap and is poisonous. It produces numerous clusters of peach-like red flowers at the ends of its branches. Double-flowered varieties are common, but there are also varieties with pale yellow and white flowers. Yellow oleander is native to South America and is a different genus. キョウチクトウ科の常緑大低木で，しばしば 5mにも達する。インド原産。乾燥，高温に強く，世界の温帯，熱帯で広く植えられている。厚手の細い葉が3枚輪生する。傷つけると白い乳液を出し，有毒である。枝先にモモのような紅花を多数集めてつける。八重咲きのものが普通であるが，淡黄色のものや白色花の品種もある。キバナキョウチクトウは南アメリカ原産で別属の植物である。
