A large evergreen shrub of the Apocynaceae family, often reaching up to 5m in height. Native to India. Tolerant of dryness and high temperatures, it is widely planted in temperate and tropical regions around the world. It has thick, thin leaves arranged in whorls of three. When damaged, it exudes a white milky sap and is poisonous. It produces numerous clusters of peach-like red flowers at the ends of its branches. Double-flowered varieties are common, but there are also varieties with pale yellow and white flowers. Yellow oleander is native to South America and is a different genus.
