A research institute that constitutes the National Institutes for the Humanities, an Inter-University Research Institute Corporation established under the National University Corporation Act. Its English name is the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics, and its abbreviation is Kokugoken. Founded in 1948 (Showa 23), it is an institute that conducts research on the Japanese language, and joined the National Institutes for the Humanities in 2009 (Heisei 21). It is located in Midori-cho, Tachikawa City, Tokyo. Since becoming part of the National Institutes for the Humanities, the institute has aimed to "build on the research it has accumulated thus far and, as an international research hub, to carry out large-scale theoretical and empirical collaborative research with domestic and overseas universities and research institutes in order to elucidate the full picture of the characteristics of the Japanese language and to deepen understanding and insight into human beings through the study of language." It also states that "an important mission is to widely disseminate and provide the results of collaborative research and related research literature information to society, and to contribute to various applications such as Japanese language education and natural language processing." A joint graduate program with Hitotsubashi University began in 2005. This program is aimed at Japanese students and international students residing in Japan, and aims to train researchers and Japanese language educators with specialized knowledge of Japanese language education, Japanese linguistics, and Japanese culture, with NINJAL being in charge of the field of Japanese linguistics.
