α-[1-(methylamino)ethyl]benzenemethanol. C ₁₀ H ₁₅ NO(165.23). One of the alkaloids found in Ephedra sinica , E. equisetina , E. distachya , and other plants of the Ephedra family. ( 1R , 2S )-(-)-ephedrine is found in nature, and is a diastereomer of ( 1R , 2R )-(+)-pseudoephedrine, which is also found in nature. It is also synthesized by various methods using 1-phenyl-1-propanone, benzaldehyde, and other raw materials. Colorless crystals. Melting point 38.1°C (anhydrous), boiling point 225°C. -6.3° (ethanol). Soluble in water, ethanol, and chloroform, slightly soluble in petroleum ether. It stimulates the peripheral sympathetic nerves to relieve bronchospasm and dilate the pupils. Both the hydrochloride and the hydrochloride of the N -dimethyl form (methylephedrine) are used as cough suppressants. They are less effective than adrenaline, but have a longer-lasting effect. α-[1-(methylamino)ethyl]benzenemethanol．C₁₀H₁₅NO(165.23)．マオウ科の麻黄Ephedra sinica，E.equisetina，E.distachyaなどに含まれるアルカロイドの一つ．天然には，(1R,2S)-(－)-エフェドリンが見いだされ，ともに含まれる(1R,2R)-(＋)-プソイドエフェドリンとはジアステレオマーの関係にある．1-フェニル-1-プロパノン，ベンズアルデヒドなどを原料とする種々の方法で合成もされている．無色の結晶．融点38.1 ℃(無水和物)，沸点225 ℃．－6.3°(エタノール)．水，エタノール，クロロホルムに可溶，石油エーテルに難溶．交感神経末梢を刺激して気管支けいれんを緩解し，瞳孔を拡大する作用がある．この塩酸塩およびN-ジメチル体(メチルエフェドリン)の塩酸塩は，いずれも咳止め薬として用いられている．アドレナリンより薬効は弱いが，持続性がある．[CAS 299-42-3]
