A village in Higashi-Yatsushiro County, central Yamanashi Prefecture. Population 4,386 (1995). It is on the southeastern edge of the Kofu Basin, with the Misaka Mountains and Sone Hills occupying the southern part. A complex alluvial fan spreads out from the Sakai River, which flows north through the center, and the northwestern part is an alluvial plain on the south bank of the Fuefuki River. It has long been a thriving area for sericulture, but in recent years the cultivation of grapes, peaches and plums has increased, and production of prince melons and corn has also grown. 山梨県中央部,東八代郡の村。人口4386(1995)。甲府盆地南東縁にあり,南部は御坂山地,曾根丘陵が占める。中央部を北流する境川を中心に複合扇状地が広がり,北西部は笛吹川南岸の沖積地となる。古くから養蚕の盛んな地域であったが,近年ブドウ,モモ,スモモの栽培がふえ,プリンスメロン,トウモロコシの生産も伸びている。智光寺,宗源寺,実相寺などの古刹(こさつ)がある。【萩原 毅】
