Saiki Bay

A bay on the ria coast in the southwest of Oita Prefecture, west of the Bungo Channel. Surrounded by the peninsulas of Kamadozaki and Tsurumisaki, the mouth of the bay is about 10 kilometers wide and 15 kilometers deep. The mouth of the bay is 40 to 70 meters deep. The bay is divided into many small bays, including Oshima (population 226 in 2009) at the mouth of the bay and Oinujima (1,022 in 2009) at the inner part of the bay, with semi-agricultural and semi-fishing villages scattered about. A sea route runs from Saiki Port (Kazura Port) at the inner part of the bay to Sukumo in Shikoku, and a ferry boat runs to Ishima on Oinujima. The bay is rich in sardines, whitebait, and other fish caught.

大分県南西部、豊後水道(ぶんごすいどう)西側のリアス式海岸の一湾。蒲戸崎(かまどざき)と鶴御崎(つるみさき)の両半島に囲まれ、湾口の幅約10キロメートル、奥行15キロメートル。深さは湾口で40～70メートル。湾内は多数の小支湾に分かれ、湾口には大島（2009年人口226）、湾奥に大入島(おおにゅうじま)（同1022）があり、半農半漁の集落が点在。湾奥の佐伯港（葛(かずら)港）から四国の宿毛(すくも)へ航路を通じ、大入島の石間(いしま)にはフェリーボートが通う。湾内ではイワシ、シラスなどの漁獲が多い。
