Generally, Russian peasants formed small settlements of a few houses or up to about 10 houses in the north, and relatively large settlements of many houses in the south. Traditional houses are called izba, and have regional characteristics in the carvings on the window frames, eaves, and ridge edges. In the north, the walls are generally made of thick logs stacked horizontally, and sometimes a second floor or a basement is built.
