A deciduous tall tree of the elm family. It grows naturally in the mountains and fields of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, but because it grows large and spreads its branches widely to provide shade, it was planted at mileposts during the Edo period. Its gray, upright trunk can reach a height of 20 m and a diameter of 1 m. Its leaves are alternate, asymmetrically distorted egg-shaped or elliptical, pointed at the tip, and have shallow sawtooth edges on the upper half of the edge. They are thick and have three prominent veins. Flowers appear on new branches around May, and although there are both female and male flowers, they are not very noticeable. The drupes are small and spherical, ripen to orange in the fall, and are sweet and edible.
