Born: July 18, 1775, Freiburg Died November 26, 1840. Freiburg. German historian and politician. He studied at the University of Freiburg, and in 1798 he became professor of history at the university, and in 1818 he also became professor of international law, a position he held until 1832. He also served as a member of the Baden Senate from 1799 to 1830, and as a member of the House of Representatives from 1830 onwards. A moderate constitutional liberal, he published the magazine Der Freisinnige (The Free Thinker), but it was soon forced to close due to pressure from conservatives. He also edited the Staatslexikon (Dictionary of State Studies) (15 volumes, 1834-43) with K. Welcker. His main works are Allgemeine Geschichte (9 volumes, 12-27) and Allgemeine Weltgeschichte (4 volumes, 35).
