Born: July 18, 1775, Freiburg
Died November 26, 1840. Freiburg. German historian and politician. He studied at the University of Freiburg, and in 1798 he became professor of history at the university, and in 1818 he also became professor of international law, a position he held until 1832. He also served as a member of the Baden Senate from 1799 to 1830, and as a member of the House of Representatives from 1830 onwards. A moderate constitutional liberal, he published the magazine Der Freisinnige (The Free Thinker), but it was soon forced to close due to pressure from conservatives. He also edited the Staatslexikon (Dictionary of State Studies) (15 volumes, 1834-43) with K. Welcker. His main works are Allgemeine Geschichte (9 volumes, 12-27) and Allgemeine Weltgeschichte (4 volumes, 35).

ドイツの歴史家，政治家。フライブルク大学に学び，1798年同大学歴史学教授，1818年には国際法教授も兼ね，32年までその地位にあった。また 19～30年バーデン上院議員，30年以降は下院議員をつとめた。穏健な立憲自由主義者で雑誌『自由思想家』 Der Freisinnigeを発刊したが，保守派の圧力ですぐ廃刊させられた。また K.ウェルカーと『国家学事典』 Staatslexikon (15巻，1834～43) を編集。主著『世界通史』 Allgemeine Geschichte (9巻，12～27) ，『世界史』 Allgemeine Weltgeschichte (4巻，35) 。
