... The management and administration of the Shogunate's forests was the responsibility of the Finance Magistrate, and the administrative affairs were overseen by the Forest Magistrate directly under him, but the direct management of the forests scattered throughout the provinces was the responsibility of the local magistrates (gundai). The forest registers kept by the Shogunate were simply called the Forest Register, or were also called the Forest Registers of Various Provinces or the Registers of Various Places. The registers included detailed records of the forests' locations (village names), area, number of trees by species and trunk circumference, forest type and land advantage, felling and planting years, and transportation distances to Edo or to markets and ports. When the magistrate in charge was replaced or the fief was transferred, the forest registers were handed over to clarify the current state of the forests. This Imperial Forest Register was accompanied by a separate volume of illustrated forests, and similar Imperial Forest Registers and illustrated maps were also created by private domains, but there were differences in the names of the registers and the contents recorded, whether in traditional or simplified Japanese. However, in 1872 (Meiji 5), after the abolition of the feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures, the new government required each prefecture to record a unified Imperial Forest Register, which was based on the Edo shogunate's records and required prefectures to report the current status of government forests (former Imperial forests) within their jurisdiction, and this formed the basis of the current national forests. *Some of the terminology used in reference to the "Imperial Forest Register" is listed below. …
