Son Kee-Chung

Japanese:
Son Kee-Chung

A former Korean marathon runner. A leading figure in the Korean sports world who won a gold medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Born on August 29, 1912 in Sinuiju, North Pyongan Province (now North Korea). In 1936, under Japanese rule, he participated in the Berlin Olympics as a member of the Japanese marathon team, winning with a time of 2 hours, 29 minutes, and 19 seconds. The Dong-A Ilbo (a Korean daily newspaper) and other newspapers that reported on this event removed the Hinomaru flag from the photo before printing it, which caused a problem and led to the suspension and closure of publication of the famous "Hinomaru Flag Erasure Incident." He later graduated from Meiji University, and after liberation following Japan's defeat in the war, he became vice president of the Korean Athletic Association in 1948, president of the Korean Athletics Federation in 1963, a permanent member of the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) from 1966 to 1979, and a member of the Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee from 1979 to 1988. He was appointed head of the marathon training committee in 1982, advisor to the Social Sports Center in 1983, and permanent advisor to the Korean Olympic Committee in 1985. In 1991, Son Kee-chung Park opened in Seoul.
