An annual plant of the Euphorbiaceae family. Widely distributed in East Asia, it is commonly found on roadsides and in fields on flat land. The stem is erect and well-branched, 20-40cm tall, with alternate leaves similar to those of the Enoki (Chinese hackberry). It flowers from summer to autumn, producing short stalks from the leaf axils, at the end of which small spikes of flowers form. Many male flowers are clustered at the top of the inflorescence, and at the base is a female flower enclosed in an involucre. In the male flower, eight stamens are arranged in two rings of four. The involucre of the female flower becomes large (10-15mm in diameter) and conspicuous during the fruiting period, somewhat reminiscent of a straw hat, hence the name Morel.
