Japanese: かっぺた織 - かっぺたおり

A weaving technique handed down on Hachijo Island in the Izu Islands, it is a double-woven patterned fabric in which patterns are woven using warp threads. A simple izari loom without a loom stand is used. The loom's mechanism is to first tie one end of a bundle of warp threads, which have been warped alternately in two colors, to a pillar or other object to secure them, then to divide the threads into upper and lower halves by twilling them. The threads are then further divided into upper, middle and lower sections using a middle tube, with one upper thread, two middle threads and one lower thread. The upper and lower threads are one color, and the middle thread is two colors. In the most cases, five heddles are attached to the upper and lower sides of each of the upper, middle and lower warp threads, for a total of 10 heddles.

伊豆諸島の八丈島に伝わる織技で，経糸（たていと）によって文様が織りだされる二重組織の紋織物。機（はた）は機台のない素朴な〈いざり機〉が用いられる。機の機構は，まず2色交互に整経された経糸の束の一端を柱などに縛って固定し，次にこの糸を綾をとって上下に二分する。そしてさらに中筒によって上糸1，中糸2，下糸1の割合で上中下の三つに分ける。色も上糸，下糸が1色で，中糸が2色。上中下に分けられた経糸の上側と下側に最も多い場合で五つずつ合計10個の綜絖（そうこう）がつく。
