...The result of this was the so-called "new cinema" (cinema novo) movement that emerged in the early 1960s, which was touted as the "Brazilian New Wave" and "Third World cinema." Following Nelson Pereira dos Santos' (1928- ) (A Dry Life, 1963), which attracted attention at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964, Glauber Rocha (1938-81) (Black Gods, White Devils, 1964), Carlos Diegues (Ganga Zumba, 1963), and Rui Guerra (Beach of Desire, 1963) also came into the spotlight. Cinema Novo, which mixed Soviet film montage with the action-packed elements of American westerns, exerted an overwhelming influence on world cinema in the 1960s (one of its pinnacles was director Glauber Rocha's Antonio das Mortes (1969), which "overturned and denounced Brazilian history and mythology"). However, in 1971 Rocha fled to Europe to escape political pressure in Brazil, and passed away in 1981 at the age of 42, without being able to make films as he wished. Since then, Brazilian cinema has remained in the background of world cinema history, and to this day...
