Astrakhan was founded in 1466 by Qāsim Khan in the Lower Volga region (-1556). It is called Astırhan Han in Turkish. The majority of the inhabitants were Turkic-Mongolian nomads, but Astrakhan, the capital of the city on the north shore of the Caspian Sea, attracted many merchants from the Volga region, the Caucasus, Iran, Turkestan, and elsewhere, and the city developed into a commercial center. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Astırhan Han" are listed below.
