Even after the Capitania system was established in 1532, the tyrannical behavior of the Portuguese colonists led the Indians to cooperate with the French, and conflicts between the Capitania chief Donatário and the colonists continued. Therefore, King John III of Portugal decided to send his own representative to the colony. Sousa, who had a successful career as a soldier and administrator in Africa and India, was selected, and when he took up his post, he arrived on six ships with about 1,000 people, including a chief treasurer, a chief magistrate, civil servants, soldiers, carpenters, masons, craftsmen, and colonists, to assist him. …
