Petroleum is a mixture of many components, but it is first fed into an atmospheric distillation tower, where gas is extracted from the top and heavy residual oil from the bottom, and naphtha, kerosene, light oil, etc. are extracted from the top to the middle of the tower to obtain products. Extracting distillate from the middle of the tower in this way is also done in other distillations, and these intermediate extraction distillate are called side cuts or side streams. The feedstock to the distillation tower is not limited to one place, but can be fed to two or more places.
