A city in the northeastern part of Tokushima Prefecture. Established as a city in 1889, it is the prefectural capital and occupies the lowlands at the mouth of the Yoshino River. The central city area is around Mt. Bisan and spreads out over the Yoshino River delta. It developed as a castle town for the Hachisuka clan, and during the feudal period it prospered through the trade of indigo balls. From the mid-Meiji period onwards, industries such as cotton textiles, woodworking (dressing tables, chests of drawers, etc.), and metalworking flourished, and after it was designated a new industrial city in 1964, heavy chemical industries moved into the coastal area. In rural areas, vegetable cultivation for the Hanshin market is thriving. The Takamatsu-Tokushima Line, Tokushima Line, and Mugi Line converge here, and the Shikoku Longitudinal Expressway was opened in 1995. Specialties include sudachi citrus, Buddhist altars, and dressing tables. The Awa Odori dance is famous. Area: 191.25 km2 . Population: 264,548 (2010). → Related topics Tokushima [Prefecture] | Tokushima University Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
