Ordinance of the Northwest Territory

Japanese: 北西部条令 - ほくせいぶじょうれい（英語表記）Ordinance of Northwest Territory

The American Land Ordinance of 1787 stipulated that when the number of free adult males in the newly established Northwestern region reached 5,000, a legislature would be formed to create a territory, and when the population reached 60,000, the territory would be eligible to join the Union as a state with the same rights as the 13 independent states. This system was later applied to other regions, and became the basic system for land in the United States, which led to the development of the West.

新たに領土となった北西部地方で，領地の自由な成人男子が5000人に達したとき議会を設けて準州とし，人口が６万に達すると独立13州と同じ権利をもつ州として連合に加入できるとした。この制度はその後他の地方にも適用され，合衆国の土地に対する基本制度となったため，西部開拓が進んだ。
