The Social System

Japanese: 社会体系論 - しゃかいたいけいろん（英語表記）The Social System

One of the major works by American sociologist T. Parsons, published in 1951. It is an important work that established the concept of "social system" by applying the concept of "system" to the analysis of various phenomena related to human behavior, and established the theory of "structural-functional analysis" as a methodological support for this concept in sociology. The concept of "system" has been applied to social phenomena since the 19th century through social organism theory and social machine theory, but in many cases these have not been theoretically abstracted enough and have remained merely direct analogies, and therefore have not been recognized as sociological theories.

アメリカの社会学者T.パーソンズの主著の一つ。1951年刊行。〈システム〉の概念を人間行為にかかわる諸現象の分析に適用して〈社会体系〉という概念を確立し，この概念を方法論的に支えるものとしての〈構造‐機能分析〉理論を社会学に定着させた重要な著作である。〈システム〉の概念を社会現象に適用することは19世紀以来の社会有機体論および社会機械論によって行われてきたが，それらは多くの場合理論的抽象化が不十分で直接的アナロジーにとどまり，そのため社会学理論としての評価を受けるまでに至らなかった。
