Astley, P.

The modern circus was founded in 1770 by Philip Astley, a retired British soldier, who built the Astley Royal Theatre, adding acrobatics and tightrope walking to the existing acrobatics.

Circus fever spread to Russia from various parts of Europe, and was popular in England in the first half of the 19th century, France in the second half, and Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. In Germany, Carl Hagenbeck, who had a zoo in Hamburg, was famous for his circus that trained animals.
