A sonata written in three parts during the Baroque period. If church sonatas and chamber sonatas are related to the structure and style of the movements, this name comes from the number of parts written. It consists of three parts: two upper parts with almost the same range, and a basso continuo. The upper two parts are usually played by two violins or two flutes, or one violin and one flute, and other wind and string instruments such as oboe, recorder, and viola da gamba. The basso continuo is usually performed by a total of four people, including a harpsichord (or organ, lute, etc.) to fill in the harmony, and a melody instrument (such as a cello) to reinforce the bass.

バロック時代における3声部で記譜されたソナタ。教会ソナタ，室内ソナタが楽章の構成法と様式にかかわるとすれば，これは記譜された声部数からくる名称である。ほとんど同じ音域の上2声と，通奏低音部による3声部から成る。上2声には普通はバイオリン2もしくはフルート2，またはバイオリンとフルート各1，その他オーボエ，リコーダー，ビオラ･ダ･ガンバなどの管･弦楽器が用いられる。通奏低音には和声充塡用のハープシコード(あるいはオルガン，リュートなど)のほか，低音を補強する旋律楽器(チェロなど)が加わり，通常は計4人で演奏される。
