A yacht that sails on ice using wind power. The surface that comes into contact with the ice is a steel sled, and it can reach speeds four times faster than a water yacht. It is said to have been designed by the Dutchman Chapman in 1768, and at about the same time, it was also used in Riga (the capital of the Republic of Latvia) and the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea coast. It then appeared in bays, rivers, and lakes in Canada and the northeastern United States, and in 1928 the European Ice Yacht Federation was formed. The highest instantaneous speed recorded was 230 kilometers per hour in Wisconsin, USA in 1938. In Japan, the Keio University Yacht Club attempted it in 1934 (Showa 9), but it did not become popular due to the lack of a sufficient ice surface for gliding.
