War film

Japanese: 戦争映画 - せんそうえいが（英語表記）war film

A general term for films that depict battlefields or combat, films that depict life on the home front with war as the dramatic backdrop, films that depict resistance to invaders (resistance films), films that depict postwar society still bearing the scars of war, etc. It can be said to be a highly ambiguous genre, but apart from war films as a type of simple action film such as The Guns of Navarone (1961) and The Great Escape (1963), when discussing the history of world cinema as a cultural history, one of the important issues is to discuss the deep relationship between film and war, that is, what kind of war films there were, under what political, economic or social backgrounds they were made, and what "ideologies" they asserted.

戦場，戦闘を描いた映画，戦争をドラマの背景にして銃後の生活を描いた映画，侵略者に対する抵抗を描いた映画(レジスタンス映画)，戦争のつめあとが残っている戦後の社会を描いた映画等々の総称。きわめて多義的なジャンルといえるが，《ナバロンの要塞》(1961)，《大脱走》(1963)といった単純なアクション映画の一種としての戦争映画を別にすれば，文化の歴史としての世界映画史を論ずる場合に映画と戦争との深いかかわり，すなわちどんな戦争映画があったか，それらがどんな政治･経済的あるいは社会的背景のもとでつくられ，どんな〈思想〉を主張したかを論ずることは重要な課題の一つになっている。
