German composer. Born in Leipzig. Studied under Schoenberg in Vienna, and won the Vienna Art Prize in 1923 for his Piano Sonata (Op. 1). His twelve-tone and chromatic style of composition at the time was replaced by a more popular style in the late 1920s as he approached Marxism. During his exile in the United States from 1937 to 1948, he devoted himself to film music and music education, and after returning to East Germany, he produced many socialist works, including the country's national anthem, before dying in Berlin. He is known for his theatre music such as Brecht's "Mother," film music such as "The Foreign Legion" (1933), and vocal music such as "Lenin's Requiem."
