It refers to theological speculation or theory about Jesus Christ, the seeds of which can be seen in the New Testament in connection with the designations of Jesus Christ, such as Son of God, Christ, Lord, and Logos. As ancient Christianity developed, it became the subject of serious theological debates, leading to the formation of orthodox doctrine and the emergence of many heresies. In the narrow sense, it is the branch of systematic (or doctrinal) theology that deals with theological speculation on the essence and actions of Christ, and can be said to be the linchpin of Christian theology as a whole. The essence of Christ is mainly discussed in terms of the facts and relationship between his divinity and humanity, while the actions of Christ are discussed in terms of his knowledge, love, emotions, and their value. The former is closely related to the doctrine of the Trinity, and the latter to the doctrine of redemption. In modern times, interest has been focused on the connection with ecclesiology and missionology, and on the theory of "the historical Jesus and the Christ of faith."

イエス・キリストに関する神学的思索ないし神学理論をいい，すでに新約聖書において神の子，キリスト，主，ロゴスなどの呼称に関連してその萌芽がみられる。古代キリスト教の発展に伴って重大な神学論争の対象となり，正統教義の形成がなされるとともに，多くの異端説を生じるにいたった。狭義には組織 (または教理) 神学中，キリストの本質および行為を神学的思弁の対象とする部門で，キリスト教神学全体のかなめともいえる。本質についてはおもにキリストの神性と人性との事実とそれらの関係が，行為についてはキリストの認識と愛と情感とそれらの価値が論じられ，前者は三位一体論，後者は救贖 (贖罪) 論と密接に関連する。現代では，教会論，宣教論との関連，「史的イエスと信仰のキリスト」論などに関心が集っている。
