A town in Itano County, in the northeastern part of Tokushima Prefecture, downstream of the Yoshino River. It was the center of indigo cultivation from the early modern period to the end of the Meiji period. Utilizing the fertile alluvial soil, paddy rice cultivation, vegetable and flower cultivation are thriving. In recent years, urbanization has progressed. It is home to the ruins of Shozui Castle, which was the center of the Hosokawa clan's rule of Awa Province in the Middle Ages. 16.27 km2 . Population: 33,338 (2010).
