...Amyntas I (r. ?-c. 495 BC) was subordinate to the Persian Empire, but his son Alexander I (r. 495-c. 450 or 440 BC) negotiated with the Greeks after the Persian defeat, and his son Perdiccas II (r. 450 or 440-413 BC) expanded his power while embroiled in the war between Athens and Sparta during the Peloponnesian War. Archelaos (r. 413-399 BC), the son of Amyntas and his brother's slave girl, murdered his father's legitimate son to take the throne, but he is known for improving the military system, moving the capital from Aegae to Pella, and adopting and protecting Greek culture.
