Fujiyoshi Setoguchi

Conductor and composer. Born in Kagoshima Prefecture. In 1882 (Meiji 15), he joined the navy military band and studied under Franz Eckert (1852-1916) and Anna Loehr (1848-?). He also studied composition under August Junker (1868-1944) and Gustav Kron (1874-?) at the Tokyo Music School (the precursor to Tokyo University of the Arts) as a student sent by the navy. From 1908 (Meiji 41), he conducted the military band at the Hibiya Park Concert Hall, and attended the coronation of the British King in 1911 with the military band. He is famous as the composer of such works as "Gunnock March" (1900), which was based on a song he composed in 1897, "Shikishima Ship March" (around 1902), and "Patriotic March" (1937).
