...In August, the people hunted down spies and lynched them, forcing Czartoryski to resign. The government of General Jan Krukowiecki (1772-1850), who came to power afterwards, was given dictatorial powers and was tasked with turning the tide, but the Russian army was already approaching Warsaw's outskirts, and all Krukowiecki could do was to get the Russians to agree to the most favorable terms possible and surrender.
