[Appearance of new birds]
No bird fossils other than Archaeopteryx have been found from the Jurassic Period, but at least 37 species of birds from 12 families in 7 orders are known from the following Cretaceous Period. Of these, Hesperornis , a loon-like diving bird, and Ichthyornis , a tern-like seabird, had teeth like Archaeopteryx, but the others seem to have been completely birds in every respect. Hesperornis, found in the Late Cretaceous strata of Kansas, USA, has well-developed teeth, especially in the upper and lower jaws, but no teeth in the premaxilla.

　ジュラ紀からは始祖鳥以外に鳥の化石は見つかっていないが，次の白亜紀からは，少なくとも7目12科37種の鳥が知られている。そのうち，ヘスペルオルニスHesperornisというアビに似た潜水鳥とイクチオルニスIchthyornisというアジサシに似た海鳥は，始祖鳥と同様に歯をそなえていたが，その他のものはあらゆる点で完全に鳥であったようである。アメリカのカンザス州の白亜紀後期の地層から産出したヘスペルオルニスは，とくに上顎（じようがく）骨と下顎骨に歯が発達するが前顎骨には歯がない。…
