Takaya - Kouke

Japanese:
Takaya - Kouke

A job title in the Edo Shogunate. Under the control of the Roju, they were in charge of ceremonies related to the Imperial Court and the nobility, such as entertaining imperial envoys, providing denso (message service), and acting as representatives for Kyoto, Nikko, and Ise. Many of them were famous families from the Middle Ages, such as the Hatakeyama, Yura, and Otomo clans, or branch families of the nobility, such as the Hino and Nakajo clans, and received official ranks equivalent to those of daimyo. It is said that the first denso-goyo positions were held by Osawa Motoie (of the Jimyoin lineage) during the Keicho period (1596-1615), followed by Kira Yoshimitsu (a branch of the Ashikaga clan), and the number of such positions gradually increased thereafter. In the late Edo period, there were 26 such families. The official salary was 1,500 koku, and the family stipend (karoku) was in the 1,000 koku range, with the Hatakeyama clan topping the list with 5,000 koku, down to the Shinagawa clan's 300 koku. All were hereditary, and as a rule, they were not permitted to take on other positions. Among these, those who were not eligible for the position due to reasons such as youth or old age were distinguished as Omote Takake. Two or three people were selected as Takake kimoiri, who served as Kyoto representatives, and were paid a salary of 800 straw bales. It is thought to have been established around the Kyoho period (1716-1736).
