A type of diffraction grating invented by R.W. Wood for infrared spectroscopy. The grooves of the diffraction grating are made with a diamond with a polished tip, creating sawtooth grooves that concentrate most of the incident energy in the desired order of the spectrum. It was named after its similarity to an echelon grating (step grating). Today, with advances in technology, most diffraction gratings with many grooves for ultraviolet use are made using this method. R.W.
